Pi and the Periodic Table

Today, I started memorizing pi and got 120 digits down and can recite them in a little less than 2 minutes. I'm using a loci memory palace system with the Major system, placing 60 digits into one room, putting 3 images (6 digits) into each of 10 locations in a room. Using this, I've so far used 2 rooms.

Although I'm not going to STOP memorizing pi, I've decided to start memorizing the periodic table of elements (I've also started Hamlet's soliloquy). I'm doing this both because it's much more useful than memorizing pi (I'm a Physics/Chemistry major) and that it has an end to its memorization. I plan on memorizing all 118 currently known elements' names, symbols, atomic numbers, and atomic masses to 6 significant figures.

I've found that doing this using loci is EXTREMELY useful and clever, because...

I can place 4 images per location and that gives me all the information I need to know. It takes 3 images for the atomic mass to 6 sigfigs and an additional image to indicate the element's symbol (I'm going to rote learn the relationship between names, symbols, and spellings). Cleverly, the numbered location of these images will tell me the atomic number. That gives me all the information I need to memorize in 12 rooms, 118 locations, and 472 images! Seems like a pretty good deal to me for the amount of information I'm memorizing.

I'm excited to start memorizing the periodic table as I feel that it will be of more use to me than pi, as I'll be able to put it to practical use, and will even be able to do some multi-tasking by refreshing my memory while doing chemistry homework!

If anyone has any other tips as to how to organize images to best fit memorizing the periodic table, please let me know! I'd love to hear them.

Re: Pi and the Periodic Table

Thanks Rookus, that is indeed an awesome periodic table! And I just had to look up the link between Manganese and mechanical diggers, so I learned something as well! I have already memorised the basic periodic table and this will be great for adding another layer of detail.

I've finished memorizing the Periodic Table just yesterday
It was real pleasure Laughing out loud
